Summer Intern Positions 2008

Lake Siljan

We are building eco-friendly “Green Village” - that will become a Retreat and Learning Center.
The plan is to have 5 timbered or log cabins for people to come and stay in, a timbered “eldhus / firehouse ” where cooking can be done inside, a timbered sauna house for cleaning oneself both physically and mentally- at the end of a long day, a barn that can be used for storage and can also be used for indoor group meetings, if the weather dictates. There now exists an outdoor cooking “eldstad” as well as a round log outhouse. We have no electricity or running water in the area (except for a stream running through the property!) We have solar panels and are planning on using wind power as well. We have a hand pumped well for water and outhouses and solar showers for cleaning up.

When finished it will resemble a small swedish village from the 16 or 1700's where people come to learn, relax and experience a unique eco-village on Lake Siljan, which has been called “the most beautiful lake in all of Europe".

We have started a blog (http://earthwayexperience.blogspot.com/) where we will be keeping everyone up to date with photos, videos and of course a “telling” of what has been happening. You will be able to see the work you did “online” and to see the work of others and the progress of “our” green village through the years.

Especially in light of global warming and climate change, we want to let people experience another more simple way of living. When you return home feeling relaxed we hope you will be inspired to make changes in your own life and to help our ailing planet.

If you would like to be a part of the exceptional Experience and see it from the beginning - then this is for you!
Here is what to expect for this summer!

My family and I have spent the last two years finishing one of the cabins, right now the family cabin. We have been doing much preparation work, including clearing a garden area, where we continue plant every summer (see photos below).

But there is still much preparation work to go this summer, including;

We are trying to purchase an over 100 year old barn that had been taken down over 40 years ago, this will be st up by the garden.
Building  a “slogbod” or 3-sided shelter and a timbered bench (see pictures below) - these will be by the lake for grilling korv (hotdogs).
Clearing of brush for trails to access the lake as well as the rich raspberry patches spread across the property.
Building a meat smoker that will also double as a stand for the solar panels.
Wood cutting and splitting.
Other items to be done as well!

Basic “wilderness foods” like moose meat, beans, rice, bacon,  potatoes, pasta, eggs, flour for making breads as well as fresh vegetables from the garden will be provided for self cooked meals, made over an open fire. There is a solar shower, with the opportunity to visit a local youth hostel for a “real” hot shower, if desired.
Basic survival, nature awareness and tracking skills will be taught and you will have lots of opportunity to practice!
If you are interested - Log cabin building experience is also available!

What we can offer this summer is the opportunity to experience the beginning of something special in the making. Lots of good work, good learning and a life experience never to forget! A bit like the summer before Dick Proenneke started filming “Alone in the Wilderness”

The cost for an internship is 200euro per month (appx - 2000sek or $300USD)

These funds are used to offset the expenses of food and other items.
